ABSTRACT
English as one of tools of communication used by most people in the world has the same elements: grammatical structure and vocabulary. In studying vocabulary, a lot of beginners find some difficulties: they are difficult to memorize new vocabularies the have got and they cannot pronounce the new vocabularies correctly.The purpose of this study is to know the problems on learning English vocabulary faced by the students. There are some cases vocabularies faced by students: the pattern of difficulty of vocabulary, the technique of learning vocabulary used by the students and the technique of teaching vocabulary used by their English teacher.
The target population of this study is all of the students of SMP and the target of sample is all of the seventh students of SMP and their teacher.
For collecting data needed for the study, the researcher uses three kinds instruments namely: questionnaire, interview and observation. Questionnaire is as the main instrument, the interview needs to provide the data collected by questionnaire, and observation is used to get the data of the technique of teaching vocabulary in class.
The result of this study shows that are some problems of learning English vocabulary faced by the students namely: learn the position, idiom, plural form and irregular verb, and then how to build sentence using the new vocabulary. They also often forget the instruments needed in learning English vocabulary like handbooks of teaching vocabulary used by English teacher. Some of them felt difficulty to understand their teacher explanation. The other problem was the technique of presenting the vocabulary material.
