ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS AND TECHNOLOGY FOR THE REFINING INDUSTRY

ABSTRACT

There are many areas of the chemical industry that are responsible for the release of pollutants into the environment. Petroleum refining is one such industry that has seen inadvertent spillage of unrefined petroleum and petroleum products. Since the beginning of the environmental movement in the 1960s, the continuing question relates to the relative condition of the environment.

The capacity of the environment to absorb the air emissions and waste products as well as the other impacts of process technologies is limited. The petroleum refining industry is keeping pace with environmental legislation to ensure that air emissions, effluents, and waste products are handled without maximum expediency and without environmental disruption. In fact, expenditures by the refining industry have risen remarkable over a very short period that speaks for industry’s efforts to protect the environment. Although dramatic improvements have been made in pollution control by the industry, there is work to be done. Perhaps the place most in need of further work is an understanding the nature of the waste materials; and to understand these materials, strong analytical programs
are necessary.

Time is showing that environmental analysts and the various test methods are no longer a mere ancillary adjunct associate to any environmental program. The analyst is a necessary part of any effort to meet the environmental challenges. Thus, the intent of this book is to focus on the analytical issues that become the focus of any environmental monitoring or cleanup program for petroleum refineries. Even though the prime focus is on refining operations, many of the principles and test methods can also be applied to the release of petroleum during recovery operations and transport as well as to the release of petroleum products during storage, transport, and utilization.

The book will serve as a reference for analysts in detailing the steps required to identify petroleum and petroleum products (although more detailed texts are available for this purpose) and those test methods that should be applied for monitoring and cleanup of petroleum and petroleum products. As such, the book offers a ready guide to the many issues that are related to ecosystems as well as to pollutant mitigation and cleanup.

To accomplish this goal, the book focuses on the various aspects of environmental science and engineering as applied to the petroleum refining industry.

Part I presents an introduction to, and a description of, the nomenclature used by refiners and by environmental scientists and engineers. This part includes a description of petroleum, petroleum refining, and petroleum products.

Part II includes a discussion of the relevant environmental regulations in the United States and descriptions of the various refining processes and the emissions from these processes. Examples are given of the application of environmental regulations to petroleum refining and petroleum products as well as current and proposed methods of the mitigation of environmental effects and waste management. Additional chapters cover the methods of analysis that might be used for samples recovered from the environment and for typical petroleum products, and how these analyses might be used to predict potential effects on the environment.
